ReadMe.Golden
7/1/91
After some playing around, I achieved a terrific golden look to apply to
Lightwave objects. I've enclosed the object, scene, bump map, and a smaller
24-bit image of the rendered picture. Just for fun, the couch's kick panel
was colored greyish, for a silvery appearance.
You'll laugh when you see the image I used for the bump mapping. I was
playing around with different images, trying to see the different effects
they would create. This one kills me. I used a 24-bit grabbed image of my
cat for the texture. And it looks terrific!
Some key items I've picked up for mapping metals... (if anyone out there has
more, I'd love to learn from you) ... since metal is typically reflective, it
requires a background to reflect properly.
Gradients or solid color works the best. I applied some nature scenes as
a backdrop, and lost the metallic look pretty quickly. Does anyone have
tips on using "real" backgrounds/backdrops with metal objects?
Bump maps are a must for a nice metallic textured appearance. Render this
scene without the bump map and you'll see what I mean immediately.
That's about it. Load the scene. You should get a requester asking for the
bump map image, since it's saved as a part of the object. Direct Lightwave
to the correct location and it should work just fine. Try other images and
other settings for different effects. And pass it along!
